Dreamworks' How to Train Your Dragon easily took the top spot this weekend from the previous weeks' number one movie, Alice in Wonderland. How to Train Your Dragon's $40 million plus debut, which is higher than I estimated, is probably aided by the fact it's in 3D and currently getting a 97% on Rottentomatoes. However, it still has a way to go to break-even with it's reported $165 million budget.
Weekend Estimates:
How to Train Your Dragon: $43.3 million ($43.3 million total)
Alice in Wonderland: $17.3 million ($293.1 million total)
Hot Tub Time Machine: $13.7 million ($13.7 million total)
The Bounty Hunter: $12.4 million ($38.8 million total)
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: $10 million ($35.8 million total)
Previous post------
A couple movies open this weekend again trying to take Alice in Wonderland from the top spot.
Hot Tub Time Machine
Why it might be a hit: John Cusack was in 2012, that made a lot of money.
Why it might tank: Poor marketing, I bet no one knows it's headed to theaters this weekend.
How to Train Your Dragon
Why it might be a hit: A review claims the 3D will make Avatar jealous.
Why it might tank: Really? Make Avatar jealous? Hrmm... Besides, the buzz for this movie seems substantially less than their previous 3D effort last March, Monster Vs Aliens.
My Predictions:
How to Train Your Dragon: $32 million
Alice in Wonderland: $20 million
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: $12 million
The Bounty Hunter: $10 million
Hot Tub Time Machine: $8 million
