This is not your typical Steve Carell comedy fare, like 40 Year Old Virgin or his hit show The Office. However, that is not a bad thing because his off beat film, Little Miss Sunshine, is an enjoyable film to say the least. And Dan in Real Life falls into the same category: low-budget, quirky, and served with some heart.
Besides Carell, there is quite an extensive cast that you wouldn't expect this movie to have. With names like Juliette Binoche, Dane Cook, Amy Ryan (probably how she got to be on the Office), and Emily Blunt, just to name a few.
Now what I enjoyed about this film is that the story plays off very well. It doesn't beat you over the head with the indie mentality and it doesn't get boring at all. It's actually a simple story, told pretty well, and doesn't get overly convoluted or complicated. I actually found this film to be quite touching. Yes, there are parts that are very formulaic, but you can't help but like the film because the story is something that a lot of us can relate to.
